This is the real journey of a family of five trying to live off as much local food as we can. As we talked about it last night we quickly came to the realization we can't go 100% local immediately - however... this is our ultimate goal. Welcome to the chronicles of our journey as a family as we learn to eat locally!
As we discussed it last night, the idea was met with mixed reviews:
my husband is excited and wanting to be completely "real" about the whole thing, which I agree with all the way. He has already decided to do a guest blog on LOCAL BEER!! fun!
Eleven year old Noodle is worried about where we can find local chips?
Three year old Biddle wanted instead to talk about what he was thankful for yesterday (which is normally our main discussion around the dinner table - his answer: swimming!)
and One year old Scribbles kept saying "Uppy" which means she wants to be held - so I guess she is along for the ride!!!
As for me I am excited and nervous as the the extra work involved in the kitchen and time management! And I'll be honest, I ate WAY too many Cheesies yesterday in anticipation of not having them again for a long time!! Uggg my stomach way so full of Cheesies - yuck!!
Mostly though as my Mommy side comes through I think about all the "teachable moments" this will bring for our kids but also for us both Sean and I... the conversations it has evolked already are pretty cool (ie. can we get local rice? Sean thinks we can get wild rice from the local reserves - yay!)
We plan on posting each local place we visit and I will be bringing my camera! I will also post recipes we find and make and our wins and epic fails!!
I am also hoping this blog gives me the confidence to call on local farmers to visit their farms and see what they are doing first hand.
I am really excited!
hmmmm.... now where do we start?
Good luck on your venture. Sounds like a lot of fun..
ReplyDeleteHave you checked out what CSA (community supported agriculture) farms are near you?

I bet the kids would have a lot of fun participating in a co-op and helping to farm and grow some veggies..
Jill, this is so exciting. What an adventure! I can't wait to find out what you learn. I understand the belly full of cheesies except mine would be full of chips.
ReplyDeleteYou can get chips at Barrie's Farm too!
ReplyDeleteHi Jill - I've linked here from Facebook (from my friend Tara above). Such a great adventure and undertaking. There are so many awesome opportunities here and for me, it's so exciting to see other families really embracing local eating - or at the very least thinking about what they can live without...and what they most certainly can not.
ReplyDeleteThis year we are the pick up location for our local CSA and my son (5)is learning so much from that. Like you said, so many teachable moments.
As for the chips - get yourself some local potatoes and make your own. :)
Looking forward to following along on your journey.
